Canary Island Golf

Just off the north coast of Africa, yet still part of Europe, lie the Canary Islands, lapped by warm seas and blessed with temperate winds through out the year. They were the last port of call for Christopher Columbus before he crossed to America and the base for the Spanish in its colonisation. Their location proved ideal for the British as, full-rigged, their merchant clippers picked up the trade winds that took them on down to Africa. The ancient mariners knew them as the fortunate islands, which they still are in the competitive world of tourism today although there is earlier evidence of golf being played on the islands British firmly left their stamp of approval when they laid out eighteen holes for the Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas in 1891, which was one of the oldest courses outside Great Britain. The rising popularity of golf over the past few years has been responsible for seven more courses coming into play on the islands of Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria and more are planned.

Being that much further south the heavy rains, that can wash out winter golf on mainland Spain and Portugal, are not felt in the Canaries and the heat of summer is tempered by sea breezes, giving the islands a genuine twelve months season. Although some may disagree, golf isn’t everything and the Canary Islands’ attractions for the whole family are limitless and best judged by the fact that they have become Europe’s leading holiday destination.
