Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas
As
the coast-road enters the island’s capital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, it
branches inland at the Cathedral, heading into the mountains and Tafina Alta.
Spectacular views open up as the road winds its way inland.
Approaching Bandama Golf a huge basin drops away to the left, deep at its
base white farm houses nestle together.
You
are viewing this panoramic scene from the rim of a large volcano, long extinct.
It’s very impressive.
Enter the
clubhouse and walk through to its terrace and the course stretches out on a
rolling terrain seemingly made for golf in this once turbulent volcanic area.
McKenzie Ross
designed the course in 1956 and became home to Spain’s oldest golf club “The
Royal Las Palmas” founded in 1891. The
Clubs original course, one of the oldest outside U.K., was close to the
island’s capital, unfortunately it lost to progress as the city expanded.
In its day it had served the British traders who used the island as a
base for their clipper ships, which relied on the trade winds to take them down
the African coast. The Bandama
clubhouse is a homely place and an ideal 19th.
The
food is excellent and the restaurant and bar are open all year.
There are full locker-room facilities and a pro-shop where tuition can be
booked from one of the teaching professionals, plus clubs and trolleys rented.
Other golfing facilities include a driving range with a floodlit putting
green, plus a pitch and bunker practice area.
There are two tennis courts available and a forty-eight stable horse
centre where horses can be rented to ride in the spectacular countryside.
